POLICE OFFICERS

AREA OF CONSIDERATION

Current and former permanent Federal Service employees, Veterans, those with special hiring authority (i.e., Schedule A)

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959
  • US Citizen
  • Valid state issued Drivers' License
  • Must attend the Law Enforcement Training Class for 10 weeks
  • Must pass a physical examination, investigation of fitness, and psychological examination
  • English language proficiency

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

One-year experience equivalent to the GS-5 level in Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: Possessing Arrest Authority, knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques; involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property; work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, or forest, or other natural or recreational environments; or in other job that provided the required knowledge and skills; performing criminal investigative duties.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENT

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

  • Will be met by either 1, 2, or 3 below
    1. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
    2. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in an MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript.
    3. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BSL) Certification
  • Preferred Experience: 3 years of experience (2 med-surg and 1 in specialty area)

  1. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work or provides understanding of the work

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST (EVENING AND NIGHT SHIFT) – Path &Lab
EVENING SHIFT: 4 p.m. to midnight

EDUCATION

Will be met by either 1, 2, or 3 below:
  1. A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (e.g., laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc.)
    AND
    completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Clinical practice programs completed after 1974 must have been accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP, formerly CAHEA), or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program of study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree.

  2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics
    AND
    two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience (e.g., blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical microscopy, etc.) within the last ten years as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). This experience must include performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory.

  3. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics
    AND
    five years of clinical laboratory experience within the last ten years performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory.

CERTIFICATION

Will be met by either 1 or 2 below:
  1. appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT
  2. categorical or specialist technologist level certification from the certification agencies listed above, such as, but not limited to, chemistry (C/SC), hematology (H/SH), microbiology (M/SM), molecular biology (MB/SMB) and blood bank (BB/SBB). Technologists with categorical or specialist certifications may only perform duties within the area of the laboratory specific to their categorical certification (e. g., an individual with a chemistry (C) certification can only perform duties in chemistry).

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

Will be met by either 1 or 2 below:
  1. Experience: One-year experience equivalent to the GS-7 in Federal Service which is directly related to the position to be filled.
  2. Education: Master’s degree or 2 academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education in medical technology or directly related field.

MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – Path & Lab

AREA OF CONSIDERATION

  1. One year of specialized experience doing technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking) and preparing reports or findings.
  2. One year of specialized experience doing technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques of the position to be filled.
  3. GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. GS-7: One-year Graduate education in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
  4. Equivalent combination of experience and education for GS-5 grade level only.

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENT

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For the GS-5: Candidates may be advanced not more than two grades above the lowest grade held within the preceding 52 weeks under non-temporary competitive appointments. For the GS-7: Applicants who have served in a General Schedule (GS) position within the preceding year are subject to time-in-grade restrictions, and must have completed at least 52 weeks of Federal Service in a position at the GS-06 level.
