Getting ready to ride for South Florida Veterans!

Saturday, April 7, 2012

Motorcycle enthusiasts and VA Volunteers gathered over Easter weekend at the Broward County VA Outpatient Clinic to kick off their first ever two-wheeled fundraising event.  Riders of all ages and backgrounds took to the streets to benefit patient programs, while enjoying the South Florida sunshine and spring breezes.
To begin the event, a “Poker Run”, riders first registered at the VA clinic and received one standard playing card. From there they visited three additional checkpoints in and around Fort Lauderdale, and were given another card at each. When they reached their fifth and final destination, they were given their last card, and the best poker hands won cash prizes.  Riders’ registration fees and other proceeds were contributed to the VA.
“People were very nice to us everywhere we went, and everyone got along really well,” said Troy Surles, a Vietnam Veteran and one of the event’s participants. “The VA did a really fine job putting this together for us.”  The VA joined the Military Debt Management Agency, a local nonprofit, in planning and executing the event.
At the end of the ride, the group met at a local restaurant at the end for live music, a pig roast, contests, and prizes. Overall, it was an excellent way to enjoy the afternoon with friends while helping our nation’s heroes, Surles said.
