Giving Back to our Heroes
The Miami VA Healthcare System (MVAHS) is proud to congratulate Eliana Hernandez, as the winner of the 2011 National Recipient of the Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship. This scholarship is sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and VA Voluntary Service (VAVS). Eliana competed with over 100 other candidates from across the nation also nominated for the scholarship. She will receive $15,000 to help with her future educational needs.
Eliana has been a student volunteer at the Bruce W. Carter Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center since 8th grade and has donated over 800 hours in service to our nation’s Veterans. Christina Bridgeman, Chief Voluntary Service, stated, “Eliana is very deserving of this award. She was nominated by her supervisor for her good work with patients and will represent the Miami VA very well.”
She has enjoyed her volunteer time by working in the Surgical Service. Eliana believes she is giving something back to our nation’s heroes. Currently, she is a full time student at Doral Academy in Miami, Florida and will graduate from high school in 2012. She plans to attend Veterinary School in college.
Eliana enjoys playing soccer in her free time and is the Team Captain for her high school soccer team. Reading is another of her hobbies. She loves to read all types of books. This prestigious award is given to an outstanding youth each year, and The Miami VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) staff is very proud of Eliana, and look forward to her participating in this year’s summer student program.
